When I began this blog, I was on a mission to lose 30 pounds in 30 days. That was April 2010, and I did lose 30 pounds in 30 days. Well, 29.5 pounds in 30 days, but it was still a success. Today, a year and a few months later, I’m happy to say I’ve kept 15 of those 30 pounds off, and have done pretty much nothing to do it, too. I don’t remember the last time I lifted a weight or even got myself going faster than a walk. Oh, I think about it all the time, but usually something better comes up, like a round of Assassin’s Creed, or work, or a ride on the hog.
I enjoy doing little 30 day things like dropping weight, changing eating habits, not swearing ( which usually doesn’t last 30 minutes ), so this time I came up with a new plan…To not eat any processed foods for the next 30 days. None. At all. In a house loaded with processed foods, living with a family addicted to anything that comes in a bag or wrapper. Our junk cupboard is more full than our crisper. But, I’m on another mission.
So, for the next 30 days, I will not eat anything that I can not plant, pick or kill, yet I have no intentions of planting, picking or killing a damned thing. That’s what my grocery store is for, and I learned many years ago the proper way to shop for food in a big box store. Stay on the outside of the store and avoid the aisles, for those of you that don’t know the tricks. The outside of the store is where all your fruits, veggies and meats are, all your healthier foods. The aisles is where all your canned and packaged processed foods are. Don’t believe me? Check it out the next time you’re in. Kim still doesn’t understand why Diet Coke is right smack dab in the middle of the store, but it is right next to the water.
Earlier today, I headed into the fridge to plan my attack, and to try to set this mission up for success. I took all the produce out and chopped it up, putting it in air tight containers for ease and convenience. I have some mangos, a papaya and lots of oranges on the other side, ready to be consumed. Like anyone else, if it isn’t easy and available, I’ll scramble to find something that is, like a tasty bag of salty Lay’s chips.
So, here I go again. So far, so good. Lunch was rice, kidney beans, chick peas and green onions. I’ll be making home made salsa to add to that tomorrow. Dinner is looking like it will be the rest of the salad, maybe topped with some tuna. The one thing I will do, though, is add a teaspoon of vinegar and oil with herbs to give my veggies some flavour. And, as far as snacks go, I’ll let you know how I made out with that one tomorrow ;^)”

How is this going?

Hey Jules,
That 30 days flew by, actually. The only thing I really missed was dipping a Ruffles chip into some Philadelphia Onion Dip while watching late night television. Well, late night for me begins at 9pm. With road side stands and farmers markets everywhere, it was pretty easy to keep stocked up on fresh fruits and veggies.
